Leeds United Air Crash Memories

Lee Matthews

Life in 1998

In 1998 Lee was a Leeds United forward who was only 19 years old

Lee recalls: It’s not something I discuss often because it was the most terrifying experience of my life. Without the experienced courageous efforts of the Captain I’m certain we would have all died that evening.

I was only a young lad at the time and didn’t really get chance to say the appropriate thank you for saving all our lives. I think back then it was a firm handshake and a quick thank you. It’s good to be able to pass my sincere thanks to Captain John Hackett and his crew.

The last 25 years

Lee Matthews stayed at Leeds United until 2001.

Lee played for a total ten clubs in all four English divisions as well as the Scottish League during a ten-year career in the game, before retiring through injury in 2007 at the age of 28.

Following his retirement from playing professional football Lee set up Sports Management International and has become one of the most respected football agents in the game.
